Japanese Maples have over four hundred recognized varieties providing many choices in size, color, and texture.  All have varied characteristics creating applications for landscape projects.  Leaf colors from deep burgundy to lime green, make a great color accent to any shade garden.  Unique branching and attractive bark texture and color provide these deciduous trees with interest all year long.

Acer griseum or Paper Bark Maple is a maple that has trifoliate leaves rather than palmate leaves like most maples.  The leaves emerge a reddish color in the spring and mature to a dark green.  The leaves offer fall colors of reds and oranges.  The best feature of this tree is the beautiful exfoliating cinnamon brown bark.

Acer japonica ‘Vitifolium’ is an upright maple with a vase shaped growth habit that reaches a mature size of fifteen to twenty feet tall.  The large green leaves can be up to six inches across and turn brilliant shades of reds and yellows in the fall.

Acer palmatum ‘Ao kanzanshi’ is an upright, narrow vase-shaped tree with variegated leaves.  The light green leaves are edged in a cream color.  This tree will reach a mature size of twenty feet tall and half as wide.

Acer palmatum var. atropurpureum ‘Burgundy Lace’ is an upright growing maple growing twelve feet tall with a wide canopy.  The leaves are deeply divided with a beautiful burgundy-red coloration.

Acer palmatum var. dissectum ‘Ever Red’ is a very popular older variety that has a cascading growth habit and reaches a mature size of ten feet tall and wide.  The delicate finely-dissected five lobed leaves are a reddish color and provide a great texture.  The new leaves and shoots are covered with fine silvery hairs.

Acer palmatum var. dissectum ‘Beni Maiko’ means ‘red haired dancing girl’ which describes this dwarf tree perfectly.  The small leaves emerge a brilliant red changing to a pinkish red color during the summer. This tree reaches a mature size of six feet tall and eight feet wide with a cascading growth habit.

Acer palmatum var. dissectum ‘Virdis’ is a cascading maple that reaches eight feet tall and wide.  The green leaves turn a brilliant gold color in the fall.

Acer palmatum ‘Wou nishiki’ is an upright growing variety reaching a mature size of twelve feet tall and wide.  The leaves emerge a light green with rose colored margins in the spring.  Throughout the summer the leaves loose the rose edges and remain green until fall when the leaves turn a bright crimson color.
